The VV-XIV was one step down from the Victor "flagship" model, the VV-XVI. It had a slightly smaller cabinet and less hand-carved trim, but it is still a beautiful and elegant machine. While XIV's are hardly considered "rare", it is very unusual to find one in truly outstanding original condition, with an uncommon finish, as is this example. It features Victor's "Golden Oak Waxed" (factory code GOW), which consists of simply a golden oak veneer with a waxed surface. The result is a "matte" (flat) finish with absolutely no gloss. The vast majority of oak, walnut and mahogany finishes were sprayed with varnish, to provide a high-gloss appearance. This waxed finish, while somewhat fragile, gives a very subdued appearance, and has survived the past 96 years without one scratch or ding. Incredible. Even the turntable felt is 100% original and has only minor discoloration. This was not a commonly ordered finish at the time, and we've only seen a handful come up for sale in many years. This is one of the most exceptional and stunning XIV examples we've ever seen, in any finish. The only thing keeping it from being rated a strong #1 condition is the presence of some slight age discoloration in the oak finish, which is to be expected over time. Hardly noticeable, but we prefer to be very conservative in our grading. The 4-spring motor runs silently, and performance is outstanding. The nickel hardware still gleams brightly, as it did when new. Even the turntable felt is original. The carved "wings" on the front-sides are ding-free and perfect. You'll look for many years to find one as nice as this. This looks as if it came straight off the showroom floor.
With most antiques, "condition is everything". For the discrening buyer or collector, who wants the "best" in their home, this machine would be hard to beat. You can find XIV's at estate sales and auctions all day long for $200.00. However, you would have to search for many years to come across a waxed oak Victrola anywhere near this caliber. It is priced reasonably, considering how few are around.
This would be a stunning addition to any living room or family area, and will provide years of reliable service. If originality is important to you, this is about as original as they come. As with all our phonographs, the motor, soundbox and all mechanical components have been torn down, cleaned and correctly rebuilt. It comes with our 2 year unconditional performance warranty.
